My long-suffering husband and I went to a wine tasting party last night in Orono at the invitation of our broker. It was held at the home of a man who is a home-builder and in fact was the builder we used when we renovated our house 8 years ago. They build all these amazing homes mostly on Lake Minnetonka and their home was just completed in June. I was looking forward to seeing it in person as I had seen photos and what’s not to like about spending a beautiful fall evening sipping wine from a South African winery?!
The couple are young and have 3 kiddos under the age of 5 and so I figured we would be the oldsters in the room and to a certain extent, we were. There were a few other people that looked AARP-eligible but I knew I was probably one of the only women in the room experiencing hot-flashes. The house was AMAZING and perfect for entertaining. It had the long kitchen table that separated the kitchen from the living room and it sat about 14 people. The house was completely decorated and every detail had been tended to. The wife is super creative and I’m not lying when I tell you she designed the custom made cement tile in the bathroom and laundry room and had it made in Vietnam. She also selected all of these AMAZING worn vintage rugs on Ebay and they were perfect for the house. In the back entryway they had this cool black and white marble tile floor and they told me how they had purchased the tile from Home Depot and then dipped it in acid to give it an aged patina. Did I mention the home is beautifully situated on a quiet bay?! It had a craft room that was to die for and it even had a boat house that was the cutest thing ever.
I swear it took me months to select and order the furnishings for my house and I still am not “done” with it as I have yet to decorate the upstairs at all. Yes, we have a bed and a night stand (both several decades old now and scratched-up from my dog) but everything else in my room is left over from the past. I honestly don’t usually offer my house guests a full-guided tour when they come over, so it never really bugged me, until last night. Their home was ‘da bomb and I kept thinking, how old are they???? I never really felt like I was someone who wanted to Keep Up With the Joneses but I did feel a twinge of envy when I toured their home. They are the nicest, most down-to-earth couple and he is a home builder but still, do you ever glimpse at how the other half lives and think, where did I go wrong? Perhaps I shouldn’t admit that as I know I am one lucky girl in every regard but do you, my dear reader, ever have similar thoughts? Please say that you do or I am going to really feel bad. In any event, here are some photos of the dream home. How perfect!
